France: Obligation to display the origin of meat in restaurants
This decree responds to a triple request:
The decree published this week therefore extends to pork, sheep and poultry meats an obligation to display the origin which has existed since 2002 for beef only.
While the origin of raw meat is already displayed in stores, it will now also be displayed in restaurants: French people who wish to do so will therefore be able to choose dishes prepared from meat produced on French territory, meat with very high health and environmental guarantees and which has not traveled thousands of kilometers.
"This decree represents a significant step forward in terms of transparency on the origin of meat, thus strengthening consumer confidence. It also constitutes valuable support for our local producers, while highlighting our breeding practices and the quality of French products". (Annie Genevard, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty)
"With this decree, we are enabling a virtuous circle, which brings together the growing aspirations of consumers and the expectations of the agricultural world. Displaying the origin of meat will allow customers to choose meat renowned for its quality and taste". (Véronique Louwagie, Minister Delegate for Trade, Crafts, Small and Medium Enterprises and the Social and Solidarity Economy)
