US pork exports to China reached 11,200 tonnes in one week

US pork exporters continue to increase their presence in the Chinese market, with a volume of 11,200 tonnes traded in the last week of August, says the latest weekly report from USDA. The volume is 72.3% higher than that traded in the previous week when Chinese importers acquired 6,500 tonnes of North American pork. China was closely followed by Mexico, with a total volume of pork imports of 10,700 tonnes, Canada (6,600 tonnes), Japan (3,300 tonnes) and South Korea (1,900 tonnes). Total shipments of North American pork totalled 32,600 tonnes, up 2% from what was reported last week. North American exporters still hope to make significant sales to China, not only because of the trade agreement signed in January this year but also because the Asian country has had a greater need to import animal protein, although it is recovering its stock after the African swine fever (ASF) epidemic.
Pork deficit in China was estimated at 4 million tonnes this year, according to ABPA.
