HKScan Latvia has switched to renewable electricity
HKScan Latvia, one of the largest food companies in Latvia, last year used only renewable electricity, thereby reducing carbon emissions by almost 2,000 tons. The full transition to renewable electricity is part of HKScan’s goal of reducing emissions and thus mitigating climate change, announced the company in a press release.
Companies can reduce emissions from electricity use in two ways: by optimizing energy consumption, which in turn reduces the impact of energy-related carbon emissions, or by switching to renewable electricity. HKScan Latvia has chosen to follow both routes, both at the Jelgava plant and in the logistics centre in Riga, switching only to renewable electricity. These changes reduced carbon emissions by almost 2,000 tonnes in 2020.
“We are implementing the transition to the use of renewable energy in accordance with the strategy of the entire HKScan Group, which aims to reduce our climate impact and ensure long-term development. Our choice also provides benefits for export markets, where it is increasingly important for existing and new partners to work with a company that is conscious of minimizing its environmental impact and taking steps to reduce carbon emissions,” says Heino Lapins, Sales Director of HKScan Latvia.
HKScan Latvia has received an EECS RES-GO certificate, which proves that the electricity used is entirely produced from renewable energy sources.
