Bird flu of the type H5 has been detected on a laying hen farm in Sint-Gillis-Waas (East Flanders). To prevent further spread of the virus, the poultry present is being culled. A protection zone of 3 kilometers and a surveillance zone of 10 kilometers are being set up around the infected farm.

Contamination with highly pathogenic variant confirmed at poultry farm in Belgium

The Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV) warns that dead or sick birds should not be touched. If you notice symptoms in your animals, contact a vet.

Strict biosecurity measures in the zones

Within the 10 km zone, all poultry farmers (professional and private farmers) must shield their poultry. In the 3 km zone, this obligation also applies to other birds.

In the rest of the country, birds and poultry from private owners do not have to be shielded. They must be given food and water indoors or shielded. “In recent weeks, the number of infections in wild birds has increased. This indicates the presence of the disease in Belgium and therefore poses a major risk to poultry in the open air. The FAVV therefore strongly recommends that you protect your animals as much as possible by shielding the chicken from wild birds. This can be done, for example, by covering it with nets.” Hélène Bonte, FAVV spokesperson

Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease to which almost all bird species are susceptible. The severity of the disease varies per animal and depends on the virus strain, the environment and any other infections. Infection can occur through direct contact with sick animals or contaminated material, such as manure or dirty crates. Indirect contamination is also possible through the air, but over a relatively short distance.
