Bolivia: Cattle ranchers ask the new minister to resume beef exports

Following the inauguration of Zenón Mamani as the new Minister of  Productive Development and Plural Economy, the Federation of Cattle Ranchers of Santa Cruz (Fegasacruz) hopes that the new authority will resume the export of beef and have a "technical mentality".

"We ask that we immediately return to the issue of exports and we hope that he has not only an open mind, but a technical mind, which is what we want to work with and provide immediate responses", demanded Walter Ruiz, president of the federation.

A week ago, the Government decided not to authorize quotas for the external sale of beef until the price of the product falls in the domestic market.

However, Ruiz believes that this measure should “never” have been implemented, as it puts at risk the international markets that were won with great effort.

The livestock sector is therefore asking the new authority to take this issue into consideration, since, in its opinion, the amount of exportable beef can generate large amounts of foreign currency for the country.

He also asked Mamani not to stay seated in his office, but to seek dialogue with the productive sectors in order to address the economic crisis that the country is going through.

"The first thing the current minister should do is not sit down, but come to work with the productive sector, meet and immediately define the changes that need to be made in that view of contribution to the productive sector", said Ruíz.

He also believes that action should be taken against smuggling and other issues, in order to provide legal security to producers.

"If there are productive conditions and legal security, this country will have a normal supply", he said.

Ruiz insisted that beef exports have no impact on the shortage of the product in the domestic market or on the final prices at which it is sold, but that there are other causes for these problems.
