Another trade war for the US
The South African Poultry Association (SAPA) is trying to force the country's Government to take retaliatory measures by suspending the 65,000 tonnes tariff-free quota for the US poultry imports as a response to the tariffs applied for the aluminium and steel imports from South Africa, reports Reuters.
Three years ago, South Africa agreed that some 65,000 tonnes of meat from U.S. producers to be imported tariff-free each year. The African country holds in place an anti-dumping tariff for poultry produced by major exporters, such as the US, considering that the products are sold below the price of production.
SAPA has filed a lawsuit to force the government to suspend the tariff-free quota for poultry.
"We hope that the U.S. and South Africa will amicably resolve any differences they have but it should not interfere with agreements already reached on poultry trade", commented James Sumner, president of the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council.
