Vietnam plans to increase poultry production

Vietnam is looking to increase poultry production in the coming years, as ASF outbreaks threaten to pave the way for a massive liquidation in the national pig inventory. In 2018, pork accounted for 65% of Vietnamese meals while the chicken was just 20%, according to Vietnam News agency.
Officials are expecting an increase in poultry consumption in the coming months, as the ASF virus is spreading from province to province. Also, rising demand from China can stimulate the Vietnamese poultry industry, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Last year, poultry production increased to almost 1 million tonnes of meat and 11 billion eggs.
"It is necessary to focus on production to meet quality standards at home and abroad. This would create favourable conditions for domestic poultry products to meet hygiene and safety standards in export markets such as Japan, Republic of Korea and some ASEAN countries", declared Phung Duc Tien, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. In the last couple of years, the Vietnamese poultry sector has developed through joint ventures with foreign companies to open new markets. Nevertheless, a possible increased demand in the domestic market, current free trade agreements and big opportunies in the Chinese market are expected to increase poultry production in Vietnam.
