Vietnam increases meat imports at a record pace

Animal protein imports in Vietnam are reaching record levels due to the ASF crisis started in February 2019. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. Pork imports are 300% up compared to the first four months of last year and have already reached 70% of the total volume imported in 2019. The main suppliers of pork are Canada, Poland, Brazil, the US and Spain. In March, Russia has sent its first shipment of 3,500 tonnes of pork after a 10 years ban due to biosecurity issues. According to VN Express agency, pork imports are 20 to 40 percent cheaper than the meat sold in the wet markets across the country, increasing the demand for the products imported.
By now, 788 pork-producing companies have been approved to enter the Vietnamese pork market, with the US holding the lions share (141), followed by Spain (139) and Italy (120).
Also, there was a sharp increase in beef, buffalo meat and poultry since the beginning of the year. According to statistical data, beef and buffalo meat imports have risen by 200%, while poultry imports have reached a total of 78,400 tonnes in mid-April, an increase of 150% compared to the same period of 2019. The main suppliers of poultry in the Vietnamese market are the US, with 65% market share, South Korea (14%) and Brazil (10%).
