UK retail channel lose small market share in beef sales

Livestock and Meat Commission in Northern Ireland announced that retail sales of beef in the UK have registered a decline of 3.2% in the last 12 weeks ending October 7.

Retail beef sales in the UK were valued at GBP 465.4 million during this time, according to Kantar Worldpanel, and the decline in the value of sales has been driven primarily by a decline in the volume of beef sold through the major retailers from 61,584 tonnes in the 2017 period to 58,876 tonnes in the 2018 period (- 4.6%).
The situation can be explained by an increase in average retail price but that didn't stop the market penetration of beef, according to Farm Ireland magazine. Kantar data shows that 71.4% of UK households purchased beef, an increase of 1.7% from the same period of 2017.
