Spain to replace plastic bags by 2021

A new law promoted last year in Spain intends to eliminate all the bags and containers used in shops must be compostable or opt for other formats to completely replace plastic bags starting January 1, 2021.

By now, since the law was implemented, in July 2018, butchers have already managed to reduce by 50% the delivery of light plastic bags to the consumer in their establishments, according to a press release from FEDECARNE Spain.

There are even some butchery-charcuterie establishments that have managed to eliminate up to 95% of light plastic bags, replacing them with other formats such as paper bags.

According to the law “merchants have the obligation to charge the consumer plastic bags of more than 15 microns (except for those with at least 70% of recycled plastic). The price, in addition, must be reflected in the purchase ticket and in the establishment must appear a poster that informs about the collection of the bags”.

Also, from January 1 this year has also been banned the delivery of fragmentable plastic bags, and from the same date, all those bags with a thickness equal to or greater than 50 microns must contain a minimum percentage of 50% recycled plastic.
