Significant decline in German meat production in 2017
As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), meat production fell by 2.0% (-167,000 tons) compared with 2016, to a total of 8.11 million tons. Thus, the value is significantly lower than the production result of the total volume of industrial production from the previous year (8.28 million tons).
ISN says that with just under 57.9 million slaughtered animals in 2017, pig slaughterings fell by 2.6% (- 1.5 million) compared to the previous year. The volume of imported pigs slaughtered in German farms dropped significantly by 18.0% (- 839,000 animals). Over the same period, the number of slaughtered pigs of domestic origin decreased by 1.3% (- 690,000 animals) to 54.0 million. Overall, this reduced the pork production by around 127,600 tons to 5.45 million tons.
The number of commercially slaughtered cattle fell by 3.1% compared to 2016 (- 111,000 animals) to 3.5 million. Particularly notable here is a decrease in the slaughter of cows by 7.0% (- 93,000 animals). In summary, this means a slaughter volume of 1.12 million tonnes of beef produced, 2.3% (- 26,000 tonnes) less than in the previous year.
The amount of poultry meat, at 1.51 million t, was 0.8% lower than in the previous year (- 13,000 t). Although slightly more young broiler meat was produced (+ 12,000 t, + 1.3%), there was production of duck meat (- 5,000 t, - 12,7%) and turkeys (- 18,000 t, - 3,7%) a decline.
