Romanian DanBred Group sees a third farm hit by ASF outbreak
Another commercial pig farm owned by Romanian DanBred Group has been hit by the African swine fever (AS) virus, reports Industria Carnii magazine. More than 42,000 pigs are to be culled after the discovery of 20 dead animals on the farm site, in Slobozia, Arges county, Romania. Lab tests confirmed the existence of the virus in the herd and a quarantine zone have been set in the area.
Last year, DanBred Group has lost 29,000 in two consecutive outbreaks on two other farms located in the same area. Back then, the company received compensation worth €4.5 million for its losses.
This month, 530 ASF outbreaks were still active in 24 counties across the country, according to the Romanian Veterinary Authority. Since the first outbreak in July 2017, more than 600,000 pigs were culled in Romania, rising the compensation figures to more than €85 million.
