JBS and partners donate 3 million tags for livestock traceability in Pará

JBS and its partners announced the donation of 3 million tags for tracking livestock in Pará. The company also announced the launch of a program to help farmers with tagging. The two initiatives will scale up a pioneering program, led by the state government, which has the potential to transform livestock farming in Brazil. The goal is to track all cattle and buffalo herds in the state by the end of 2026 – Pará has the second largest herd in the country.

The announcement was made during the panel "From Davos to Belém: Defining Brazil’s path to a sustainable and low-carbon cattle industry,” held during the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The program, which has already shown impressive results in its first year, involves a coalition formed by government, producers, civil society and industry. “Together, we are agents of transformation in this supply chain", said Gilberto Tomazoni, global CEO of JBS.

Of the 3 million tags, 2 million will be directed only to small producers in the state, meeting half of the estimated demand for 2025 in this group. Of this volume, 1 million will be donated by The Nature Conservancy (TNC), a member of the coalition, and the remainder directly by JBS.

Additionally, JBS is launching the "JBS Accelerator" program to support the adoption of tags by its indirect suppliers. The initiative includes the donation of 1 million additional tags and all necessary services throughout 2025 to help producers implement the tags. Teams from JBS and its partners will identify and visit farms to carry out the work with traceability operators trained and accredited by the Pará State program.

The Pará program was launched by Governor Helder Barbalho during COP28 in December 2023 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A Management Council was created involving several government agencies, industry and producer representatives, and civil society entities. JBS has been part of the group since the beginning.

In 2024, the Company conducted a pilot tagging program for 28,000 head of cattle around its Marabá and Redenção plants, which helped evaluate the technology and animal movement requirements established by the Management Board. The lessons learned from this work, shared with all members of the coalition, will be essential for the large-scale implementation of the program.

JBS also supported the creation of a training program for traceability operators, who are required to correctly read tags on farms, in factories and at other points where animals move.

The program also includes technical assistance and retraining for rural producers. Through the Green Offices, created by JBS in 2021, more than 15,000 farms in the Amazon region have already been regularized, including more than 1,000 in Pará. These farms have already committed to restoring 6,500 hectares of forest.

Additionally, last year, JBS implemented new technical assistance services through its Green Offices, offering business management consulting, training in animal care and nutrition, improved pasture management and adoption of regenerative agricultural practices.

To facilitate producers' access to services, the company launched the Virtual Green Office in 2024. Now, producers can seek assistance by email, telephone and WhatsApp from anywhere in the country.
