INTERPORC: "Interprofessional organizations provide stability and a greater capacity to respond to emerging and global challenges"

This was stated at a conference commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Law regulating OIAs. An event organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and attended by Minister Luis Planas, who said that “interprofessional agri-food organisations are key to boosting the competitiveness of the sector”.

In his presentation, Alberto Herranz shared the experience of INTERPORC, an interprofessional organization founded in 2006 and recognized by OM 2472/2008 of August 1. INTERPORC currently has three basic objectives: to defend the image and reputation of white pigs; to disseminate the benefits of pork and its products; and to promote and disseminate the triple social, environmental and economic sustainability of the sector.

The Director General of INTERPORC has recalled that "Interprofessional organisations can be important instruments at the service of a particular agri-food sector, but always collective services for the benefit of the entire sectoral food chain".

He also stressed that "the operational capacity, viability, effectiveness and usefulness of the OIAS depends entirely on the degree of operational, organisational and financial coherence they have".

For this reason, and with regard to livestock-based OIAs, he has warned of the importance of “prioritizing, updating and strengthening their instruments and tools”, as well as “adapting their regulatory standards to allow for optimal management capacity and a constructive and beneficial bureaucratic simplification”.

Finally, he has raised the possibility, in certain livestock sectors of particular complexity and strongly threatened by the impacts of external decisions, of assessing the need to evolve towards more innovative models of negotiation and collective action.

Great participation

In addition to the presence of Minister Luis Planas, the event was also attended by Ana Rodríguez, Secretary General of Agricultural Resources and Food Safety; José Miguel Herrero, Director General of Food; and representatives of various interprofessional organizations, who were able to participate in the analysis of the evolution and role of these entities in the agri-food sector.
