Argentina doubles beef exports to the US
Argentinian beef seems to cover a part of the gap appeared in the US beef supply chain due to the coronavirus crisis and plants shut down. So far, almost 3,900 tonnes of beef have been shipped to the American market, more than double than last year' s exports (1,771 tonnes). At the same time, that could cover the losses resulted in the European market, which seems to be fully saturated with beef.
According to data from the Argentinian Consortium of Meat Exporters, between January and May, the United States imported 398,213 tonnes of beef from 12 countries, 16,328 tons more than in the same period of the previous year, informs La Nacion newspaper.
Among the countries that benefitted from the disruptions appeared in the American supply chain are Costa Rica, Ireland, Honduras and Argentina. In the first four months of 2020, these countries increased their beef exports in the US between 66% and 120%. "The trend is going to continue. You still have to find distributors, people who are in charge of selling there, retailers," considers Miguel Schiariti, president of the Argentinian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (Ciccra). In November 2018, the United States formalized the reopening of the market for the Argentinian beef with an annual quota of 20,000 tonnes and a tariff of $44 per ton.
