Wholestone Farms plans a $500 million investment
Wholestone Farms, an entity owned by regional pork producers, plans to build a more than $500 million pork processing facility in Sioux Falls. Plans for opening the plant are made for 2025, as the company needs necessary permits from the authorities. Wholestone is made up of roughly 200 family farms, pork producers, farmers throughout the Midwest, and 70 of those owners live within a 50-mile radius of Sioux Falls. We need another plant. The Sioux Falls plant is a more ideal location for the ownership group,” Wholestone CEO Scott Webb said.
The current processing plant owned by Wholestone Farms is located in Nebraska and has a capacity of 2.8 million head a year. However, from 2023 owners are expected to double its capacity but that won't be enough to process all the pigs produced by the cooperative: 12 million head. Recently, Smithfield Foods invested in the same area in South Dakota in a similar unit and Wholestone Farms wants to increase production of added value products under its Wholestone Foods brand.
