Wales remains highly dependent on pork imports

Pork is highly appreciated in Wales but the nation must rely mostly on imports to cover the domestic demand. In the region, pork is consumed more than beef and sheep combined, despite the fact that Wales has 23,000 pigs, 9,300,000 sheep and over 1,000,000 cattle.
Nevertheless, Porc.Wales and Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales initiated a promotion campaign to encourage locals to consume more of the pork produced in Wales.
"It is an initiative devised to highlight the quality and availability of Welsh produce to consumers across Wales. During 21-27 January, we will be focussing on the versatility of pork from Wales, featuring delicious recipes from Chef Angela Gray. Welsh herds are generally smaller, reared ethically and sustainability is key for the future of the industry. This contributes to the quality of the meat that ends up on the plate of the consumer", said Porc.Wales association in a press release.
The campaign will have a second episode in February, when the Chinese New Year ( year of the pig) will start on 5th February.
