Vion Food to reopen its beef abattoir in Leeuwarden
The company based in the Netherlands said it improved a series of technical details at the facility, which was officially opened in spring but Vion had to close it after the Dutch Food and Consumer Goods Authority (NVWA) found a high percentage of rejected carcasses during an inspection.
The group said it solved a series of “teething troubles” that can occur in a new abattoir.
"For example, the design of the stable has been adapted to facilitate the live inspection of the cows. In the original design, there were solid partitions in the stable. These have been replaced by fencing, allowing the veterinary inspector a better view of the animals," Vion's statement read.
Vion implemented improvements in the line, making the inspection process and the registration of inspection data more efficient.
Vion added that its new beef abattoir plays an important role in the sales of beef from the dairy supply chain in the north of the Netherlands.
"This high-quality chain offers a sustainable sales channel for recognizable meat from the region. The latest insights regarding animal welfare and hygiene have been incorporated into the design of the abattoir," Vion's statement read.
