Vietnam's cephalopod exports on the rise
The exports of squid in the mentioned period accounted for over 60% of Vietnam's total export value, while the octopus exports had a share of 40%.
According to VASEP, there was an upward trend in the cephalopod exports in January-July 2017. Vietnam saw a rise in its shipments of squid products of 62%. "Of that, exports of fresh/live/frozen squid, which was the main export product of Vietnam in Jan-Jul 2017, recorded the highest growth of 89% from a year before. Sales of other processed squid increased by 74%, while those of dried/grilled squid went up 21% year on year."
Referring to the octopus exports, VASEP says they increased by 40% in the first seven months of 2017 compared to the corresponding period from last year. A share of 83% from the total octopus exports was reported by the fresh/live/frozen/dired items which increased by 47% compared to the previous year in January-July 2017. Meanwhile, exports of processed octopus inched up 14%.
Vietnam exported cephalopods to 59 markets, up 9 markets over the same period in 2016.
Vietnamese shipments increased to all the top 9 major import markets in the January-July period of this year.
"Of that, the proportion of exports to South Korea, Japan and ASEAN decreased while that to the EU and China was up from the same period of 2016," according to VASEP.
