Vietnam works to rebuild its pig herd

Vietnam, the second-major loser in the Asian ASF crisis after China, plans to rebuild its pig herd by importing live animals from Thailand, one of the few Asian countries that weren't hit by the virus. Since the beginning of the ASF outbreak in Vietnam, in February 2019, the national pig inventory has been reduced by more than 20%, or 6 million head, according to official data.
According to local media, quoted by Reuters, 20,000 breeding pigs will be imported from Thailand at prices rating from $550 to$640 to restock the local farms. The first batch of 250 pigs has already entered the country, while the rest it will be sent gradually.
The deputy minister of Agriculture Phung Duc Tien declared for Vietnam Agency News that the demand from local farmers exceeds 100,000 breeding pigs for this year. In the first four months of 2020, Vietnam's pork imports have increased by 300% due to the meat shortage that appeared last year. Beef and poultry imports have grown by 200% and 150%, respectively.
