Vietnam prepares to be hit by avian flu
13 villages from 11 localities in Vietnam have been hit by avian flu this year and the authorities are concerned that the disease may spread further in the moths to come due to changing weather and surging poultry transportation in the time ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, informs Vietnam Plus.
23,000 birds were culled due to avian flu viruses A/H5N1 and A/H5N6 in the first half of the year. Localities across the country are asked to carry out measures to prevent the spread of the flu in line with the Law on Animal Health and the Ministry also issued a set of recommendations for the farmers to create optimal conditions for poultry farming in a bid to make up for the decrease in pork production caused by the African swine fever (ASF). They are also instructed to devise plans and mobilize forces to prevent the disease, spray chemicals in high-risk localities and keep a close watch on the growth of local poultry, especially in previously-affected areas.
The ASF situation in Vietnam has reduced the national pig inventory by 10% and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommended to declare the ASF outbreak a national emergency.
