Vietnam launches vaccine against ASF
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam has reported that in the coming days it will begin to market a vaccine against African Swine Fever with a protection time of six months. That will cover a whole production cycle for commercial farms but it remains to see if other nations will adopt the vaccine immediately. However, the Ministry informed that the vaccine, at an estimated price of $1.40, will be released in the coming days on both domestic and international markets. The vaccine has been developed by Dabaco Group thanks to the transfer of biological products from the exotic species disease research center of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
The United States (US) has been studying the virus for a decade and in 2020, Vietnam asked the US to transfer genetically altered samples of the virus it has developed to facilitate vaccine production.
First diagnosed in Kenya more than 100 years ago, ASF is present in many countries. In Asia, the disease is present in a dozen countries. Since then, the epidemic has spread in Vietnam and has killed almost 10 million pigs in the country, causing an estimated 1.3 billion dollars (1.208 million euros) in damage to households and livestock businesses. It has also impacted production in 15 countries in the EU, damaging mostly the sector in Romania and Poland. It is also present in pig farms in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Serbia and North Macedonia.
