Vietnam is targeting $3.5 billion on marine exports
Vietnam is expecting a growth of 17% on its marine exports, with tuna exports leading the top of marine food items sales. Despite likely hurdles, marine exports should reach $3.5 billion this year, believes Nguyen Thi Thu Sac, Vice Chairwoman of VASEP.
Tuna exports are also expected to reach $1 billion in 2019, with $350 million over the figures recorded last year.
Squid, octopus and other seafood products will see steady or slightly increase in exports, said VASEP representative. Shipments to Japan are expected to jump by 27% to 900 million USD, with exporters focusing on marine fish, surimi and value-added products.
Exports to the Republic of Korea are also expected to rise by 27% to 600 million USD as exporters take advantage of the free trade agreement with the country to boost shipments of all kinds of products, especially squid, octopus and crab. Exports to the US are expected to increase by 10%, with a special focus on tuna and other fish as well as squid, octopus and crab. Also, exports to Southeast Asia could reach $480 million in value, up by 18% compared with last year.
"In 2018, exports to the EU fell by 4-20%, except for tuna, whose shipments increased by 11.5%, but even that growth halved from 2017 due to the impact of the yellow card. The sector is working to get the yellow card warning lifted this year", added Ms Nguyen Thi Thu Sac.
