Vietnam has culled more than 1 million pigs
In just two months, Vietnam has culled 1.2 million pigs due to ASF multiple outbreaks. The virus is present in 29 provinces of the country and the spread is to continue, as governmental sources commented.
"The risk of the virus spreading further is very high and the evolution of the outbreak is complicated," the government said in a statement, according to WHTC radio. The disease entered the country in mid-February from China and since then it has spread through 29 provinces, including Dong Nai, a region that supplies 40% of the pork consumed in Ho Chi Minh City, one of the largest economic hubs in the country.
The number of animals culled in the last three months is almost the same that China has reported in February, 6 months after the outbreak has been reported. Pork accounts for three-quarters of total meat consumption in Vietnam, a country of 95 million people where most of its 30 million farm-raised pigs are consumed domestically.
In March, FAO and OIE experts have recommended Vietnamese authorities to declare the swine fever outbreak as a national emergency.
