Uruguay tries to position itself in the Chinese beef market

Such is the importance that the South American country gives to meat, that the National Meat Institute of Uruguay (INAC) has its own stand at the third China International Import Expo (CIIE), which for these days takes place in the eastern municipality of Shanghai. In fact, it is the only one.

"This is the third time that INAC has participated in the CIIE. There are more and more opportunities to do good business through this business platform, which seems to us to be an excellent opportunity," the Uruguayan ambassador to China, Fernando Lugris, told Xinhua.

"Unfortunately not all the representatives could travel because there are still many restrictions due to COVID-19, but what this stand seeks is to represent all these companies in the export sector," said the diplomat, who announced that many companies are already thinking about the fourth edition of the event.

According to the ambassador, this fair is one of the most important in the world for links between importers and exporters in the meat sector.

"We want them to know perfectly all our authorized plants. What are the products that we are exporting, what are our cuts that are available to be sent to the Chinese market," he added.

According to Lugris, in the two previous editions of the CIIE, numerous commercial agreements were signed and, above all, many contacts were made between new Chinese companies interested in importing meats from Uruguay.

"Last year, a Uruguayan plant reached an agreement to sell 1,000 tons of beef," revealed Cai Jiaxin, INAC representative for Asia.

For her, Chinese consumers are going to pay more and more attention to the quality and safety of food, which means good opportunities for the Uruguayan meat industry.

Lugris reported that an INAC office in Beijing will soon be established to better promote Uruguayan meat exports in China.

In the diplomat's view, openness remains at the center of China's development agenda. This is highly valued in Uruguay, and it is a very clear message of support for free trade and multilateralism, he said.
