US pork exports to Eastern Europe are rising
US pork exports to East European countries have increased in the first half of the year and Macedonia has received the first shipment of American pork. Albania and Ukraine have also increased their volume of pork imports, according to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
In Eastern Europe, pork exports to Albania reached 1,873 tonnes, up 19%, to a value of $3.8 million, up 74% compared to the first half of 2019, were the largest since 2012 and exports to Ukraine, 557 tonnes, up from just 22 tonnes last year; reached to a total value of $1.35 million (+441%), were the largest since 2014. Exports to Macedonia reached 1,164 tonnes valued at $2.89 million, up from zero a year ago, said USMEF in a press release. Ukrainian market is expected to receive more pork imports this year as the national pig inventory decreased by 5.9%, to 5.97 million head.
