US opens Moroccan beef market

US beef has gained a substantial advantage in the Moroccan market as the Free Trade Agreement signed between the two countries allows the US producers to export a  quota of Prime beef cuts of 6,404 tonnes and 2,343 tonnes for other beef cuts and variety meat. The quota will be expanded to 6,660 tonnes of Prime beef and 2,390 of other beef cuts and variety meat next year, informs US Meat Export Federation.
All duties on US beef will be phased to zero by 2023, but Morocco’s out-of-quota duties are currently extremely high at 275%. Therefore, US beef should have an advantage over competitors. Through September, Morocco’s 2018 beef imports were mainly from the European Union (1,894 tonnes, +10% year-over-year, mostly frozen boneless beef, valued at $9.8 million), Argentina (680 tonnes, -70%, mostly frozen bone-in and boneless beef, valued at $2.9 million) and Brazil (207 tonnes, -11%, mostly frozen boneless beef, valued at $900,000). The EU is currently negotiating a free trade agreement with Morocco, reports the federation.
Documentation requirements and other details are posted in the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Export Library for Morocco.
