US is considering tariffs on European sausages and ham

US administration is ready to impose tariffs on EU imports such as sausages, ham, cheese and whisky in a dispute related to subsidies given to aviation giants Boeing and Airbus. The Boeing-Airbus spat is the longest and most complicated dispute dealt with by the World Trade Organization, which aims to create a level playing field in global trade, informs France 24.
This week, the Office of the US Trade Representative has issued for public comment a list of products that could potentially be subject to additional duties. "This supplemental list adds 89 tariff subheadings with an approximate trade value of $4 billion to the initial list published on April 12, which included tariff subheadings with an approximate trade value of $21 billion," it said in a statement.
The list also includes sausages, hams, pasta, olives and many other kinds of cheese including reggiano, provolone, edam and gouda. At this time, Washington is already caught in a trade war with China that has seen the two sides impose tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars in two-way trade and hurt the American pork industry by limiting access to the Chinese market due to tariffs up to 70% on pig meat.
