US beef exports in Brazil are facing a labyrinth of laws
US beef has received the green light for exports to Brazil since late 2016, after a 13 years ban on bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), but entering this market is like going to a labyrinth, complains one of the US Meat Federation Export (USMEF) representatives.
Cheyenne McEndaffer, USMEF technical services manager, has been present to APAS Supermarket Show, one of South America's largest food trade fairs, where she found herself confused by the situation regarding Brazil's beef imports regulations, reports Feed Stuffs magazine.
"We wanted to learn if there was a national standard or if the import procedures vary by state. What we found is that there are absolutely state variance, and we tried to make note of those to help our exporters be better informed and prepared", declared McEndaffer.
Until now there are three or four US companies that managed to respond all the requests regarding labelling so they can start exporting to Brazil, mentioned USMEF representative.
The first shipment of beef was made in the spring of 2017 at a six-months distance from the clearance given by Brazil authorities. US beef producers noticed that top sirloin cap (picanha), loins, ribs, tri-tips and livers are the cuts that can perform well in the Brazilian market but the legislation is still confusing for many companies in this sector.
