UK sheep meat exports down by a third
Sheep meat exports from the UK have dropped by 37% in June, due to a significant decline in shipments to the EU market (35% y-o-y). Lower exports to France, Ireland, Germany and Italy have taken their toll on the performance of the product in external markets, mentioned Hannah Clarke, AHDB Analyst. 4,600 tonnes of sheep meat were exported in June, 37% down from a year ago and 5% less than in May. According to official data, this year, UK sheep meat exports have been in decline year on year for almost every month, except for March when the sector exported 500 tonnes more than a year ago. "Average GB farmgate lamb prices were above French prices for the majority of June, which may have contributed to lower volumes. GB prices have been below French prices since the end of June, so it will be interesting to see if exports show any recovery," she said.
Imports were also in decline, with 4,200 tonnes of fresh and frozen sheep meat arriving in June, 5% less than a year ago and 12% lower than in May. Volumes from New Zealand were 16% lower year-on-year at 2,800 tonnes, while shipments from Australia grew to 700 tonnes. Year-to-date UK sheep meat imports totaled 27,700 tonnes, down 17% on the same period a year ago.
