UK pork industry is targeting Asia-Pacific region

The Asian countries have become more and more important for UK pork exports but not only China plays an important role in this sector. According to AHDB figures, in 2016, UK pork exports have reached a value of GBP 43.3 million (€49.4 million) plus other GBP 31.4 million (€35.8 million) in offal exports, reports Farming UK magazine.
However, China is not the only market targeted by UK pork sector in the region. Phillippines is also an important destination for British pork, the exports to this country increased by 40% last year.
In the first three months of 2018 pork exports to Phillippines have increased by 50% compared to Q1 of 2017. Also, pork exports to South Korea and Japan had a promising start in 2018, growing by 26% and 61% respectively.
"The Asia-Pacific region as a whole continues to present many future opportunities for UK exporters and we must do all that we can to ensure our products benefit from a growth in the market. The Asian middle class is projected to expand rapidly over the coming years, with 2/3 of the world’s middle class living in the Asia-Pacific region by 2030, according to the OECD.
With the uncertainty surrounding the future of UK and EU trade relations in light of Brexit, it is crucial that we look to exploit the opportunities presented in the Far East and work to build on the already impressive export figures from the past few years", declared Jonathan Eckley, AHDB Export’s new Head of Asia Pacific.
