UK pork industry is looking to increase exports to China
UK could boost its pork exports to China in the following months due to ASF crisis that is disrupting the domestic market in the Asian country.
With ASF spreading across China, the country’s import demand could increase significantly, supporting global pork prices and providing an opportunity for the UK, mentions Farmers Weekly magazine.
The UK exports around 180,000t of pork a year, with 64% of this going to the EU and 18% going to China. Sales to China doubled (+2,000 tonnes), likely a consequence of the disease disrupting its domestic industry, and pig offal exports to China increased by 65%.
Nevertheless, the disease remains a very real threat even for the UK pig farms. In September, the government raised the risk status of ASF entering the UK from low to medium after an outbreak in eastern Europe saw 180,000 pigs culled. This was due to the UK continuing to import frozen pigmeat from affected countries.
