UK pork imports are rising

Imports of pig meat, excluding offal, have increased during March by 7% compared to figures from the same month last year. Imports from Denmark, Germany, and Ireland have all increased significantly year-on-year. Total pig meat imports in the year to March increased to 237,000 tonnes. At the same time, increased demand from China and the Netherlands has offset declines to other markets, which resulted in a 0.5% decrease in exports, according to AHDB analyst Tom Forshaw.
The domestic production is characterized by higher carcass weights, which supported an increased production of 1% in April. "Clean pig slaughter in April was up by 1%, to 888,700 head, according to Defra data released on May 16. This keeps pig slaughter for the year roughly in line with the same period of 2018. Higher carcass weights remain a theme, resulting in an increase in production for the year to April of 1% to, 311,000 tonnes. This increase is despite boar and sow slaughterings dropping sharply in April", commented Forshaw.
