UK gains access to the Japanese poultry market
After signing the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the UK and Japan, in October last year, the British poultry industry is cleared now for exports in the Asian country. According to estimates made in terms of values, exports may reach up to GBP 13 million ($18 million) per year.
Food Minister Victoria Prentis stressed that "our high-quality poultry products with their exceptional taste are recognized throughout the world, as are the high standards of food safety and animal welfare demonstrated by farmers and producers. from across the UK. We are working hard to open up new markets for our agri-food businesses, and this is a significant opportunity for the UK poultry industry."
The British meat industry is already benefitting from agreements signed with Japan for beef, lamb and pork exports. Negotiations for poultry exports have been going on over the past four years to agree on specific animal health requirements. The agreement signed in October 2020 ensures that UK companies can benefit from duty-free trade on 99% of UK goods exports to Japan after several years.
