The Philippines increased meat imports
In the first quarter of 2022, the volume of meat imports in the Filipino market has increased by 24.5% reaching a total of 262,900 tonnes, according to data released by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI). Pork products—mainly pork cuts and offal—accounted for over half of the total volume (138,700 tonnes), official data reveals. That is an increase of 36.7% compared with the same period last year.
Chicken meat imports rose by 22.2% totaling 78,000 tonnes, while beef imports have grown by 11.9% reaching 33,400 tonnes.
Spain was the main supplier of pork in the Filipino market (52,100 tonnes), while Brazil played the role of the main supplier of chicken meat and beef, 40,100 tonnes and 16,800 tonnes, respectively. So far, the Filipino government is taking into consideration an extension until the end of 2022 of the Executive Orders that allowed pork and poultry imports to enter the country at reduced tariffs since last year.
