Spain pork industry has a new voluntary program for Duroc breed

Three big Spanish association have presented to officials from the Ministry of Agriculture a new labeling program adapted for Duroc pig breed. The Duroc Labeling Self-Control Program (PAED) involves the whole food chain, from producers to meat processing facilities.
The program is owned by the Business Federation of Meat and Meat Industries (FECIC); the National Association of Porcine Cattle Producers (ANPROGAPOR); and the National Association of Breeders of Selected Pig Livestock (ANPS) and it will evaluate the labeling of those products, meat and meat products that mention "Duroc" on their label.
"The importance of labeling and that the information contained in the labels strictly comply with what is established in the legislation is key to maintaining consumer confidence in meat and meat products in the market. For this reason, the information between the different links of the chain must be maintained and can not be lost, in any case", mentioned the head of the Technical Department of FECIC, Ignasi Pons, quoted by CdeComunicacion website.
One of the requirements that must be fulfilled in order to make use of the Duroc mention is that at least one of the parents must be a purebred Duroc and must be registered in an officially recognized genealogical book.
"The objective of this Program is to carry out controls by an external entity, which will guarantees that the meat and meat products that include the 'Duroc' mention comply with the current labeling legislation and with the requirements of this program. The label will show 'Duroc' and the racial percentage of it,", explained Mercedes Vega, Genesus' General Director for Spain, Italy & Portugal.
The PAED will be applicable to farms and companies that produce meat and meat products that want to be part of this program of self-control of quality, on a voluntary basis.
