Singapore allows lab-grown meat consumption
Lab-grown meat that replicates chicken will be in restaurants menu in Singapore after the government allowed US start-up Eat Just to sell its products in the Singaporean market. Lab-grown meat is going to be an ingredient for chicken nuggets in some restaurants. The news marks a "breakthrough for the global food industry", said the company in a press release.
"I'm sure that our regulatory approval for cultured meat will be the first of many in Singapore and in countries around the globe," said Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just. There were concerns lab-grown varieties would be too expensive bur representatives of Eat Just are saying that the current production price allows the company to sell its products at parity with premium chicken nuggets sold in high-end restaurants. Other products including lab-grown chicken breasts are to be rolled out soon in the market, confirmed a spokesman for Eat Just. Meat consumption is projected to increase over 70% by 2050, and lab-grown alternatives have a role to play in ensuring a safe, secure food supply, Eat Just said.
The Singapore Food Agency, the city-state's regulator, confirmed it had approved the sale of Eat Just's lab-grown chicken in nuggets after concluding it was safe for consumption.
