Sick cows in Polish slaughterhouse worry Europe

Polish police are investigating an abattoir suspected of illegally trafficking in sick cattle after TVN24 broadcasted .ashort film showing sick animals slaughtered in an abattoir.

Poland's chief veterinary officer says his inspectors and police were tipped off about "suspected illegal slaughter" at an abattoir near Ostrow Mazowiecka in north-eastern Poland.
Also, he mentioned that the film broadcasted shows "illegal activities, as slaughter was carried out deliberately at night, in order to avoid official supervision", according to BBC.
During the check, 8 sick cows were found at the abattoir and "the owners of the animals were identified, along with an animal dealer who transported cattle unfit for transport, and abattoir staff responsible for animal welfare there", mentioned the statement.
Other slaughterhouses in the area are now being checked by the veterinary inspectors and police.
Based on the slaughterhouse data, Poland is the seventh-largest producer of cow meat in the EU, with 558,500 tonnes of beef and beef products recorded in 2017. The country produces almost two million head of cattle a year for slaughter and most of the beef is exported to the EU market and third countries.
