Sheep exports from Australia banned for some months
During the months of June, July and August, sheep exports to the Middle East are banned in Australia, according to a statement released by the Australian Livestock Exporters' Council (ALEC). A memorandum was signed between the industry body and exporters to stop the export of sheep to the Middle East during that time of the year. "This industry initiative was implemented to manage the potential risk of heat stress. This has been reflected in legislation and regulated by the Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment.
Sheep cannot be exported to certain countries at certain times of year under this legislation. As research and technology advance, the prohibition period will continue to be reviewed," ALEC announced.
The measure comes after years of protests from animal welfare activists that were accusing transporters for massive losses of animal lives during the time of transportation across the sea.
