Sausages from leading British supermarket may cause hepatitis E
Researchers at PHE found a common link between the brand of sausages and ham from an unnamed retailer and 60 people infected with the virus Hepatitis E (HEV), which can cause liver cirrhosis and death.
“Only Supermarket X, especially own brand, was significantly associated with HEV G3-2,” the report said, according to The Times (link https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/news/thousands-at-risk-of-pig-virus-from-supermarket-x-sausages-z2l0s5m0g).
After testing blood donations for HEV, NHS Blood and Transplant wants to screen donated organs and tissue for the virus found in pigs.
There has been no evidence of pigs in the UK being infected with the virus, but pork products from Holland, Germany and other European countries have tested positive.
PHE declared that it will not disclose the name of the retailer which commercialized the infected pork products.
According to the study, nearly 200,000 people are infected every year with HEV in the United Kingdom.
