Romania's largest slaughterhouse hit by COVID-19
The largest meat processor in Romania, Smithfield had to halt its operation in a plant located in Timisoara, not far from the Hungarian border. A week ago, 7 Vietnamese workers from Smithfield Romania were tested positive for COVID-19 and since then other cases have been confirmed. The outbreak could be even larger as only half of the tests taken in the abattoir have been analyzed so far.
Smithfield Romania has 2500 employees and a processing capacity of more than 1.3 million head per year. Last year, the turnover reported by the company was of €260 million. The company announced that operation in the plant will be halted for a week. Lately, several large abattoirs in Europe have been impacted by COVID-19 infections, with Rheda unit owned by Tonnies standing out as the most severe outbreak registered by the European meat industry.
