Romania looks to export frozen sheep carcasses to Qatar
Adrian Oros, Romania's Agriculture Minister, has asked the Qatari Ambassador in Bucharest to transmit his request for the Qatari government to accept frozen sheepmeat carcasses instead of livestock exports, at least for the summer months. "The minister said that there is a major interest from sheep farmers in Romania to establish sustainable partnerships for sheep export. In this regard, the minister transmitted the proposal to encourage and support Qatar businessmen in establishing direct contacts with associations of sheep breeders in Romania to develop viable partnerships with mutual benefits. Also, Minister Adrian Oros expressed the request that the state of Qatar accept the replacement of live animal exports with carcass exports
chilled / frozen, during the summer, especially when it is hot, as recommended by the European Commission", said a press release from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Last year, a ship with 14,000 sheep onboard has drowned in Midia port, Constanta, Romania. The following investigation revealed that the animals were overcrowded and there are suspicions that the number of live animals aboard could be higher than the figure declared initially. The case is investigated by the Romanian prosecutors. Queen Hind ship had a valid license for all the EU ports and was supposed to transport the sheep from Romania to Saudi Arabia. Romania is an important supplier of live animals for several countries in the Middle East region, especially to Jordania, but lately, the authorities are seeking to impose a ban on livestock exports.
