Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP, the most consumed Italian product in 2023

With over 2.5 million hams produced and exports equal to 19% of total sales, the San Daniele PDO sector is also recording excellent results for 2023. The number of pre-sliced trays exceeds 21.3 million certified packages.

Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP, the most consumed Italian product in 2023

Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP  is confirmed as one of the most purchased and consumed Italian food and wine product in 2023, both in Italy and abroad. The production of San Daniele DOP, in the year just concluded, was of  2,590,000 legs  produced in the 31 production plants, located within the city of San Daniele del Friuli, coming from the  3,510 certified farms  located in ten regions of the Center -northern Italy and delivered by the 44 slaughterhouses of the DOP supply chain.

The export share recorded growth and stood at  19%  compared to total sales for the year with approximately 3 million kilograms sent to the market outside Italy. 55% of the total export quotas were destined for the European Union, while the remaining 45% were exported to third countries. 

The countries that hold the most significant share for the export of Prosciutto di San Daniele DOP are confirmed in order of volumes: France, United States, Australia, Germany and Belgium. The other main foreign target markets are Switzerland, Austria, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg and Canada. In 2023, excellent performances were recorded, in order of exported volume, for the United States (+11%), Australia (+7%), the United Kingdom (+30%) and the Czech Republic (+18%).

The number of pre-sliced San Daniele ham trays   exceeded  21.3 million certified packages , equal to 407,000 hams (+1% compared to the previous year), for a total of over 2 million kilograms, confirming itself as a consolidated trend in line with new consumption methods.

The total turnover, deriving from production and distribution activities, remains at  360 million euros, in line with previous years, after the +14% recorded in 2022.
