Poultry products from Belgium are back on the Phillippines market

The Department of Agriculture (DA) from Manilla has lifted a temporary ban imposed on Belgian poultry products after different areas from the European country have been exposed to an avian flu virus. Poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen from producers based in Ootskamp and Menen have now green light to enter the Phillippines market.

A final report submitted by Jean-Francois Heymans, Director of Animal Health and Safety Products of Animal Origin under the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain in Bruxelles, Belgium to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) shows that the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) cases are now closed and resolved.

Based on the evaluation of the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) the risk of contamination is "negligible", as mentioned by Manilla Bulletin newspaper. The lift of importation ban is referring to poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen from Belgium. However, all the import transactions must be verified by the DA, BAI, and the National Meat Inspection Service.
