Positive growth for Vietnam's pangasius exports to the UK
Analysts at VASEP said that the UK was the only market which reported an increase in Vietnamese pangasius imports. Vietnam exported pangasius worth US$45.7 million to the UK market in 2017. This accounted for 2.6% of the total export value, up 2.5% over 2016. Vietnam pangasius had to compete with other whitefish products in the UK such as frozen cod, haddock and frozen pollock.
"Vietnam pangasius has more competitive prices compared to other whitefish products. In the coming time, the UK expected to be a potential market of Vietnam’s seafood companies," the VASEP statement read.
Vietnam occupies the 6th spot among the main exporters of whitefish to the UK market. Iceland and China supply most of the whitefish to the UK, accounting for 20-45% of its imports.
In 2018, Vietnam’s pangasius exports forecasted to slightly increase and remain the same level as that in 2017. VASEP analysts concluded that compared with other importing markets in the EU, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the UK continued to show the positive growth and good signs of recovery.
