Pork exports from the UK went up in February
AHDB analyst Bethan Wilkins says that, based on HMRC data, fresh/frozen pork exports were 17,500 tons in February worth £22.5 million ($31.4 million), the value increased by a modest 6% due to lower average unit prices.
The volume growth was based on the increase of 13% sales to EU countries (up by 1,200 tons). The most important importers from the EU were Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland.
Wilkins says that the increase in export appeared based also on a "narrowing gap between UK and EU pig prices during the month may have aided pork trade within Europe."
Pork exports to China and Hong Kong were down by 8% (-260 tonnes) and 15% (-124 tonnes), respectively.
On the other hand, according to Wilkins, UK's pork exports reported increases to other global markets.
"Volume shipments to the US grew by nearly a third on the year (+105 tonnes) and trade with the Philippines (+244 tonnes) and South Korea (+115 tonnes) more than doubled. In contrast to last year, around 25% of pork exports to the US consisted fresh/chilled rather than frozen product during February. This boosted the value of pork exports to the US by almost 50% (+£965,000), which helped support the value of UK pork exports overall," said Wilkins.
