Poland expects pig herd contraction in the following months
Polish swine inventory will decline this year, according to PolPig. For the first quarter of 2022, piglet imports are down by 18% and the situation is doubled by a significant reduction in sow numbers. "The decrease in piglet imports, in connection with the reduction of the domestic sow stock, means that we will feel a gap in the supply of fattening pigs. Due to larger Easter trade orders and the growing number of refugees from Ukraine, we expect the growing price trend to continue in the near future, despite the appreciation of the zloty against the euro," PolPig announced in a press release.
Currently, the average pig meat price in Poland is about €1.88/kg carcass, in trend with other EU producing countries. The purchase prices of pigs in post-slaughter weight compared to last week increased (+ 11 ₵), in Denmark (+10 ₵), Spain (+7 ₵), Belgium (+3 ₵) and the Netherlands (+2 ₵). In Germany, at the beginning of April, the price of fattening pigs increased to €1.95 / kg (+3 ₵).
The situation in the EU pig market is a little bit strange, as the bloc estimates an overproduction of almost 2 million tonnes of pork for this year. At the same time, abattoirs are complaining about the lack of raw material in the market. Slaughterhouses also mentioned having problems in using their full slaughter capacity. Some plants are considering limiting the slaughter to 4 days a week due to the low supply of raw material.
