Philippines wants OIE to recognize its bird flu-free status
The Philippine government is ready to declare that avian influenza is no longer a problem for the country.
A BAI representative has told Business Mirror that the agency is currently preparing the documents that will be soon sent to OIE and that the authorities are monitoring the provinces of Pampanga and Nueva Ecija to make sure that the disease has been completely eradicated.
Data provided by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) indicates that the avian influenza (AI) outbreak has affected the output of the duck producers in the country. Philippine duck production has declined by 2.67% to 9,793 metric tons (mt) in the Q1 2018 compared to year-earlier levels.
PSA said in a report that the decline was based on a reduction of laying flocks in the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Eastern Visayas and Caraga.
Meanwhile, according to PSA, the overall production of the poultry sector has increased by 5.24% in Q1. The sector accounted for 15.93% of the total agricultural output.
Chicken and chicken eggs contributed to the sector’s positive performance with respective growths of 4.93% and 7.42%. At current prices, the sector’s gross earnings amounted to PhP 57.5 billion ($1.078 billion), or 8.53% higher than the previous year’s level.
