Paraguay agrees to meat imports from USA
US Department of Agriculture announced that the counterparts from Paraguay accepted to import pork, beef and natural casings, along with poultry, eggs, live animals and genetics from the USA.
Until now, Paraguay has imported meat mainly from Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. According to US Meat Export Federation, Paraguay pork imports in 2017 totalled 1,287 tonnes, with most of this quantity coming from Brazil while small volumes were imported from Argentina and Spain. The total value of pork imports in 2017 is estimated at $3.7 million.
Also, in 2017, Paraguay reported 2,511 metric tons of beef imports valued at $6.5 million that originated mainly from Brazil, but some product was also imported from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay.
Paraguay have 6.9 million inhabitants and even they don't eat to much pork, US representatives of this industry are hoping to influence their habits in the years to come as the average income is higher than in Vietnam and Philippines.
"Paraguay won’t be a huge market for U.S. pork, but given the current trade climate, the U.S. pork industry needs all the new markets it can get. Opening new markets, even small ones like Paraguay, and expanding existing markets is imperative", explained Jim Heimerl, president of National Pork Producers Council.
