Ocean Fish: "Fresh is the new trend in the Romanian market"

Romanians have started to eat more fish and seafood in the last couple of years, as Olesea Brinzila, Import &Branding Manager at Ocean Fish has told us in an interview for EuroMeatNews.com.
The company that she represents is one of the largest producers in the Romanian market and lately has developed a new range of products that may create a new generation of loyal customers.
"This year we have launched a range of products for kids (3+) named OceanFISH Kids that comprise 2 items, although is going to expand to encourage the fish consumption among kids. We have been pioneers in introducing smoked salmon in the Romanian market and we intend to grow the same idea. At this point, we have 2 items launched: smoked salmon filet for kids, carefully selected, preservative-free, sugar-free, with low sodium content, naturally smoked and smoked trout filet carefully selected, preservative-free, sugar-free, with low sodium content, naturally smoked.
We have also launched a range of Bioproducts comprising fresh Romanian carp, fresh Romanian trout, Norwegian salmon, and bream. This range of products is responding to the demand in the domestic market and to retail consumer", explains Olesea Brinzila.
Due to the fact that the company has obtained its IFS certification most of the fish and seafood is imported in order to respond to traceability requirements. "We import fish from all over the world. We also use fish from Romanian producers but only if we can track down the source of the supplier. We pay a lot of attention to the traceability requirements. Almost 85% of the fish is imported and the rest comes from the local producers", she added.
According to data recorded by Ocean Fish, the domestic market has witnessed a growth in sales of fresh products. In fact, even if Romanians are eating around 7 kilos of fish per year, the consumption is increasing year by year, with a growth in the volume of sales of 10% predicted for 2018. "We see an increased demand for fresh fish and the consumer is more informed and educated about the products. I think that fresh fish is going to be the best selling item this year", declared Olesea Brinzila. Ocean Fish has finalized this year the expanding of its processing unit for fresh fish that allows the company to add 1,000 MT of fresh fish per year into the market. The value of the investment was about € 2 million and it was partially supported by EU funds.
